The Campus Read-Option: Georgia Gets Its First True Test Against LSU

The Bulldogs, who haven’t played a ranked team yet, are out to prove that they’re right there with Alabama atop the college football hierarchy.

The biggest game of the weekend is the SEC showdown at Tiger Stadium between No. 2 Georgia and No. 13 LSU.

Georgia, who lost a nail-biting, thrilling national championship game to Alabama last year, has a sparkling 6-0 record thus far, but they have yet to meet a ranked opponent. That will change on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, where they’ll knuckle up against an LSU squad that has been one of the more pleasant surprises this season.

From there, Georgia will have its lofty ranking challenged as they embark on a brutal schedule of four straight games against ranked SEC opponents. After LSU, they get an off week before matching up against No. 14 Florida, No. 18 Kentucky and No. 21 Auburn.

Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm throws for 260 yards and tosses touchdown passes to three different receivers as the Bulldogs win 43-29 over the Missouri Tigers.

The Tigers climbed as high as No. 5 in the Top 25 poll before falling to then-No. 22 Florida, 27-19, last Saturday. And their schedule doesn’t get any easier as well, with upcoming dates against No. 24 Mississippi State and Nick Saban’s dominant No.1 Alabama squad.

Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm, who completes an insane 73% of his passes, will have his hands full going up against an incredible LSU secondary that is loaded with NFL prospects. For the first time all year, the Bulldogs will be knuckling up against a supreme defensive unit. Fromm’s efficiency and the Bulldogs’ relentless running attack will definitely be challenged by Devin White, the Tigers’ exceptional All-American linebacker.

Fromm, who shined as a true freshman last year in the SEC title game, the Rose Bowl and the national championship game, is coming off his best performance of the year thus far after completing 17 of his 23 passing attempts for 276 yards and three touchdowns in last Saturday night’s 41-13 bludgeoning of Vanderbilt. And he has some supreme weapons to work with in Terry Godwin, Riley Ridley and D’Andre Swift.

Best Freshman Running Back in The Nation

LSU signal caller Joe Burrow, who threw two interceptions last week against Florida, needs to prove that he can sling the rock against elite defenses. And he’ll get his chance on Saturday against one of the best defensive backfields in the land. After spending three years as a backup at Ohio State, Burrow transferred after the spring semester and immediately snagged the starting job. The 6-4, 216-pound redshirt junior has passed for more than 1,215 yards and six touchdowns, but he needs to significantly up his pedestrian 52% completion percentage.

Helping him out will be talented, bruising running back Nick Brosette, who’ll need to touch the rock at least 25 times to keep Georgia’s defense off balance.

After a pre-game scuffle, the No. 25 LSU Tigers open their season on a high note with a 33-17 win over the No. 8 Miami Hurricanes behind RB Nick Brossette’s 125 yards rushing and two touchdowns and a great defensive effort, including LB Jacob Phillips’ pick-6.

Brosette is averaging five yards per carry and has eight touchdowns. He had 95 yards in only 15 carries against Florida last week, and dazzled in the season opening win over Miami with 125 yards on 22 attempts.

On the defensive side of the ball, keep your eyes on LSU’s Greedy Williams. Only a sophomore, the 6-3, 184-pound defensive back is one of the nation’s premier shutdown corners. Last year, as a freshman, he was named a third-team All-America and first team All-SEC selection. Fromm will need to know, at all times on Saturday, where No. 29 is lined up and who he’s covering while trying to avoid throwing in his direction as much as possible.

Both squads score at an impressive 92% clip when they reach the red zone, with Georgia putting up 18 touchdowns and five field goals when they get inside the 20-yard-line. The Tigers have punched in 14 touchdowns and nine field goals.

LSU has already proved that, at this juncture, they’re one of the country’s best teams. Georgia hasn’t really played anyone of significance yet, so they’re out to prove that they’re in the same company as Alabama as the cream of this year’s college football crop.
