Real Sports Highlights “Guarantee Games” and HBCU Vulnerability

Make sure to check out the next installment of HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel tonight, where the controversial topic of college football’s “Guarantee Games” is examined. 

A mainstay in the college sports economy, the “Pay for Play” system pits some of the smaller, weaker teams in NCAA Division I (particularly FCS schools) knuckle up against some of the strongest ones not for glory, but for the money they need to survive. 

The payers are elite programs with budgets as high as $100 million, who sell out home stadiums and arenas for a lucrative blowout victory. The payees are often historically black colleges and universities, struggling to keep their doors open, and easily outclassed on the field and court who must take these games in order to keep the programs going, sometimes taking unconventional steps to participate in these contests.
