With 1.8 seconds left in the anticipated second matchup of the new Big East saga, Chris Mullin vs. Patrick Ewing: The Second Era, Ewing drew up a play for his Georgetown squad. They missed the shot and the game went into overtime. In the overtime period and down by three, Georgetown connected on a three-pointer with time running out and St. Johns hoisted a prayer that fell short sending the game into a second overtime.
Georgetown came alive in the second overtime and fought off a late rally by the Red Storm to secure a 93-89 win, providing Big East coverage with an excitement and fan anticipation that it has been lacking.

Neither school is as talent-laden as they will be a few recruiting classes from now, but Ewing and Mullin, names that are as familiar as peanut butter and jelly, provide all of the star power that the TV audience needs. Watching the old legends – whose culturally-defining play in the 80s served as the catalyst for the current college basketball explosion – have definitely brought the excitement back to both schools.
Saturday’s game was proof. St. Johns played above their heads against a more talented Hoyas squad, but when these two teams collide you can throw the stats out and history tells us it will be a close game.

St. Johns,Georgetown, like the old days, said the FS1 analyst covering the game. You gotta love it. The old days would be 1985 when both players would immortalize themselves in college basketball lore, meeting in the Big East Championship and The NCAA Final Four, which featured three Big East teams.

Patrick Ewing is now 2-0 against Chris Mullin in their respective college coaching careers. Jessie Govan hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc to put the Hoyas ahead with 25 seconds left and they held on to beat the Red Storm 69-66 In the first matchup on January 9th.

This nail-biter was a three-point game with less than a minute to go with Georgetown leading 68-65. St. Johns fought for several rebounds and converted to cut the Georgetown lead to 68-67 with 30 seconds left. Following a Georgetown freethrow, BK-bred Shamari Ponds of St. Johns shake, rattled and rolled his way to the cup for two points to tie the game at 69-69 with 13.4 seconds let.
The overtimes provided fans with more thrills., Georgetown produced a few more of them.

Times have changed since Georgetown and St. Johns ruled the college basketball landscape. College basketballs brightest stars dont frequent these East Coast basketball factories anymore. It has been a struggle for both programs to soar in this new hoops culture. As they struggle to recapture some past glory, you can see a shining light at the end of the tunnel. Leadership has been established and proven winners are running the show. Coaches with job security who bring a grit and years of NBA experience and will impress their culture of winning onto the team over time.
