Miami Marlins’ Dee Gordon suspended for 80 games for PED usage

In shocking news released early this morning, MLB has suspended Miami Marlins star, Dee Gordon, 80 games for PED use.

According to the release from MLB:

Dee Gordon has received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for exogenous Testosterone and Clostebol, performance-enhancing substances, in violation of Major League Baseballs Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The 28 year old Gordon had his best season ever last year when he won the NL batting title, led the League in stolen bases, won a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger. As a result, Gordon received a five year, $50 million contract extension with the team. He’s expected to lose $1.63 million in salary due to the suspension and while he could appeal, he has decided not to.

Dee Gordon is a very important part of our team, and we all love him and support him, Marlins president David Samson after the suspension was announced (via the AP). That said, I don’t like or condone what he did. He is an important member of this organization and will be for many years to come. It’s a huge, huge disappointment to the kids, to our fans, to his teammates and to everyone in our organization every single day.

He will be back 80 games from now, and he will be welcomed back to this organization. But in the interim period, we expect him, and we are positive that he will do everything that’s necessary to make it up to his fans, to his teammates and to this organization.

Gordon has a career batting average of .291 during his six years in the majors.
