Georges St. Pierre Returns To The UFC

The UFC returns to the Mecca of boxing, Madison Square Garden, and brings out the firepower when former UFC welterweight champion, Georges “GSP” St. Pierre returns from retirement at UFC 217 on Saturday, November 4th.

GSP returns for an immediate title shot against current middleweight champion, Michael “The Count” Bisping. The move marks a step up in weight to 185 pounds and the first time he has ever fought outside of the welterweight limit of 170.

The main event is just one of three title fights for the evening that has Cody Garbrandt defending his bantamweight belt against former teammate T.J. Dillashaw, and current UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk defending her title against Rose Namajunas.

One of the most dominant champions ever, St-Pierre (25-2) famously left competition in 2013 claiming that MMA needed to do a clean sweep of PED’s before he would ever compete again.

Now four years later, the French Canadian from Montreal is hoping to become only the fourth fighter to win UFC titles in two divisions (Conor McGregor, Randy Couture, BJ Penn). With wins over Johny Hendricks, Nick Diaz, BJ Penn and Matt Hughes, GSP has beaten a whos who of MMA in the last decade.

St. Pierre returns during a time when the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has been on a tear suspending fighters for violating their performance enhancing drugs policy. Most recently, Jon Jones was stripped of the UFC light heavyweight title for his UFC 214 win over Daniel Cormier. Jones has had numerous offenses and had just returned from a year-long suspension.
