Dikembe Mutombo Eyeing A Bid To Purchase The Rockets

Houston Rockets owner Les Alexander put the franchise on the market earlier this week and NBA Hall of Famer and former Rocket Mutombo is trying to line up a team of heavy hitters to invest in purchasing the team.

“I’m trying to convince some people about trying to buy this team,” Mutombo told Houston’s Fox 26 Sports. “I’m talking to a lot of people already since (Monday). We’ll see. It’s one of the best franchises right now. It’s really the right time. I’m just talking to the people who can cut the check and they can make me be part of it. I’m working on that.”

When Alexander purchased the team in 1993, he paid $85 million. It’s now estimated to be worth $1.65 billion.

Mutombo is trying to follow in the footsteps of former athletes like Michael Jordan, who owns the Charlotte Hornets, and Mr. New York Yankee himself, Derek Jeter, who is in the mix with an investment group that is serious about buying MLB’s Miami Marlins.

Mutombo starred at Georgetown before playing 18 years in the NBA. He finished his career with the Rockets in 2009.

In talking about his desire to buy the team, he touted Houston, who added All-Star Chris Paul this offseason to a squad anchored by MVP runner up James Harden, as a top tier franchise.

“It’s like someone who’s already sitting on the runway trying to take off,” Mutombo said in reference to a Rockets squad that boasts future Hall of Famers Chris Paul and James Harden. “That’s what kind of team the Rockets are right now. The Rockets are a great franchise. They have a great team. They’ve got great coaches, great basketball players, great staff. Whoever is coming in, it’s not like they’re going to have to rebuild it.”
