In our continuing series, College Basketball Narratives, we sit down with some of the most driven and accomplished athletes, coaches, television analysts and leaders in the world of basketball to talk about leadership, achievement and their life journey through the prism of sport.
In this episode, we caught up with former Ohio State Buckeye and NBA player Clark Kellogg, who continues to do exceptional work in the game with CBS Sports as one of the best and brightest basketball analysts around.
College Basketball Narratives- Clark Kellogg
A former McDonald’s All-American out of St. Joseph’s High School in Cleveland, he is widely considered to have the best prep career in the city’s history, once dropping 51 points and grabbing 24 rebounds in a state championship game. His 51-point outburst remains a state title scoring record.
He went on to an accomplished three-year career at Ohio State, where he earned Big Ten MVP and All-Conference accolades, before being drafted in the first round of the 1982 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers.
The man known as “Special K” took the league by storm, becoming one of the few rookies to average 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. He seemed to be on a Hall of Fame trajectory until knee injuries ended his career prematurely at the age of 25.
But his impact on the game could not be curtailed, as Kellogg has gone on to become a staple of CBS Sports’ college basketball coverage and one of the network’s distinct voices at this most wonderful time of year when March Madness takes center stage. When listening to his analysis, it’s obvious that few others have a sincere love and passion for the game in the way that he does.
A thinker and leader with a voracious appetite for books and ideas, one of Kellogg’s other passions in education. He currently sits on Ohio State’s Board of Trustees.
It was an honor and privilege to have him hop in the ride to cruise around New York City, in the midst of his March Madness preparations, to talk about his journey in life and this beautiful game that he loves so dearly.
