Cody Garbrandt Shows “No Love” For Big Weekend KO

Hope you didnt get the meat sweats or a Kool-Aid coma over the holiday weekend. Either way one thing is for sure, MMA delivered in a big way on a low-key card.

Cody Garbrandt KOs Thomas Almeida in the 1st Round

Former undefeated Bantamweight, Thomas Thominhas Almeida (19-1) lost his 0 from the surprising offensive brilliance of Cody Garbrandt (9-0), who turned on the gas and never took his foot off the pedal under the Las Vegas lights.

It only took one round for the Team Alpha Male product to exert his dominance. Neither fighter was interested in touching gloves during the pre-fight instructions and at the sound of the bell, Garbrandt went into the center launching the first high kick attack.

Almeida blocked with his hands high to start, then the two traded low kicks where Garbrandt was the better executor. Finally, a right hand from Garbrandt clipped Almeida, who wobbled and was busted up early. Garbrandts relentless attack paid off as Almeida staggered to the floor and a game Garbrandt smelled blood, jumping on top of him sealing the deal with strikes.

Former world champion Miguel “Titere” Vazquez (36-5, 13 KOs) defeated Ecuador’s Erick Bone (16-4, 8 KOs) in a 10-round battle that put the former IBF World Lightweight champion back in the win column.

Vazquez worked behind a strong jab and brought the fight to Bone throughout the contest in San Antonio. Bone was able to return fire and was effective at times when countering.

The jab of Vazquez eventually led to success with the right hand that was able to hurt his opponent and keep the battle-tested Bone from building momentum.

Both fighters landed at a nearly identical rate as Vazquez connected on 22 percent of his punches while Bone landed 21 percent. However, it was Vazquez with the advantage in punches landed at 94 to 74.

The fight featured many close rounds, which was reflected by the varied scores of the judges. In the end, all three had the fight for Vazquez by scores of 99-91, 97-93 and 96-94.

Bone has now lost 3 straight, with the other two losses coming via unanimous decision to Chris Algieri and a knockout by Shawn Porter.
