Audio Two – Top Billin’ (Original Version) [HQ Video]

Album: What More Can I Say? (1988)

I recall the first time hearing that track from as a 14-year-old way back in October 1987.  The beat would cause spontaneous spasms and gyrations of the hips, feet and hands.  Crafted from samples and a drum-break rearranged from The Honey Drippers song titled Impeach the President, the beat was provided by Daddy-O of Stetsasonic.

The Honey Drippers – Impeach The President

Released on Alaga records 1972.

Comprised of Milk Dee and Gizmo, The Audio Twos first single was called Make It Funky, but it was its b-side mate Top Billin that was prove itself to be a hit.  Even today, the beat from Top Billin is one of the most widely sampled hip-hop tracks to date.

Though we can all recall jumping up bustin the Wop or the Cabbage Patch whenever those familiar drums came blaring over the radio, causing Milk and Gizmo to garner overnight success in the process, the ascension of the Audio Two was stymied after their first album.  Their second studio offering was only moderately successful and the third was shelved despite receiving a catalog number.

When an artist steps to the fore in order claim fame and fortune, many cant even conceive of an unfavorable circumstance resulting from a positive situation, or vice versa.  With gangsta rap gaining popularity, and party rap becoming rapidly marginalized in the process, the Audio Two disbanded in 1992.

Among the most notable samples of Top Billin is 50 Cents I Get Money.

In fact, Milk Dee has a verse on a remix to the single upon which he thanks musicians for continually sampling Top Billin.  Though long past the days of performing as a duo, Milk Dee and Gizmo are still getting money.
