Alabama’s Da’Shawn Hand arrested for DUI – mugshot already up

Alabama has a lot at stake this season. The football factory who most recently won titles in 2011, 2012, and 2015 want to get back to the top of the food chain after losing in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game to Clemson in 2016. To say Hands poor judgement came at the worst possible time is an understatement.

The DUI charge comes less than a week before the Crimson Tide open fall camp and is another disappointment for Hand, who arrived to Bama as the top-ranked strong-side defensive end in the country as part of a stellar 2014 recruiting class.

“This type of behavior is not acceptable, and we are disappointed in Da’Shawn’s actions,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said in a statement Saturday, per College Football Talk’s Bryan Fischer. “We are still gathering information and will evaluate what we need to do in terms of appropriate discipline as we move forward, so better choices and decisions can be made in the future.”

While Hand hasnt been a drop dead All-American over his first three seasons, he was hoping for a breakout 2017, but this latest arrest might offer some insight as to why he hasnt elevated to projected heights, accumulating just 44 total tackles, six sacks and one forced fumble in just 24 appearances for the Tide.

Hand was supposed to assume a significant leadership role on the D-line this season, but his latest arrest might throw a kink into things.

Coach Saban doesnt have time to be coddling an underachieving upperclassman as the squad prepares for a formidable season opener against Florida State Seminoles on Sept. 2 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
