Riot Games is forcing Echo Fox’s hands following alleged racist behavior by a shareholder. And rightfully so.
The video game developer and major esports tournament organizer issued a statement concluding its preliminary investigations into alleged racist comments by an Echo Fox minority investor.
In the statement, LCS commissioner Chris Greeley said “Hate speech, threats, and bigotry have no place in the LCS. We have directed Echo Fox to take appropriate corrective action within 60 days.”
If Echo Fox does not remove individuals responsible, LCS will take action on the future of the esports team in the LCS. Previously, Dexerto published an email report from former NBA champion Rick Fox to “all major stakeholders” stating that he is leaving Echo Fox in response to alleged racist remarks from one of the company’s shareholders, Amit Raizada.
The LCS has concluded its preliminary investigation into the alleged comments made by a member of the Echo Fox ownership group. Hate speech, threats, and bigotry have no place in the LCS. We have directed Echo Fox to take appropriate corrective action within 60 days. (1/2)
“I will not support or be associated with such behaviour and attitudes displayed at the shareholder level,” Fox said. “Racism is an anathema to what my personal brand strives for and tolerating any form of discrimination such as this is not acceptable.”
This is a big move from Riot Games and the LCS commissioner. For those who don’t know Echo Fox competes in various leagues but the LCS is its bread and butter. To cut them off from LCS would be a big knife in its side. Plus, it is interesting to see a black man like Rick Fox hold power in this situation because as we all know, that’s not always the case.
He clearly wasn’t and isn’t afraid to leave a world and team that he grew to love and appreciate because of alleged racist BS. Fox is a prominent celebrity in the esports world and one that this industry can’t afford to lose.
So, I stand with LCS and everyone else, remove those racist individuals and keep it stepping.
