The son of Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal sat out his freshman season at UCLA after doctors discovered an issue with his heart during a preseason checkup.

Shortly after the discovery, it was announced that he would be sidelined for the entire 2018-19 season.

At the time, the university released a statement saying, “He will remain enrolled in class and on the men’s basketball team during this redshirt year. The UCLA men’s basketball program completely supports Shareef and his family as he gets this issue resolved.”

O’Neal also thanked those who stuck by his side during this time.

I wanna thank the people who stuck with me throughout this all… this was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to overcome … I couldn’t have done it without the support I got from all of you

O’Neal, 19, was the second-highest ranked recruit in UCLA’s top-10 recruiting class according to CBS Sports.
