This weekend, Morehouse College president John Silvanus Wilson Jr. announced that President Barack Obama will be delivering the Morehouse College commencement address on May 19th. Wilson previously worked as executive director of the White House Initiative on Historical Black Colleges and Universities, and Obama’s commencement address is the third year in a row that one of the three most visible African-Americans in the world will speak at an Atlanta HBCU.
As Spelman College had First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah deliver commencement addresses over the last two years, it will be an added bonus to witness President Obama grace the graduation stage at Martin Luther King Jr.’s alma mater. Last month, Obama was also sworn in on MLK’s Bible during his second inauguration. Throughout his first term, Obama's budgets sought to increase spending on Pell Grants which are important to 50 percent of the HBCU students who qualify for them. On another note, keep your eyes peeled for how many references the President makes to the son he never had.
