Michael Vick's an example of a rare athlete. After being sentenced to 14 months in federal prison, the quarterback has emerged as a solid citizen and a role model. However, with celebrity comes scrutiny and five years later, outrunning the specter of his past has proven to be more difficult than imagined.
Despite being given the key to Atlantic City by Mayor Lorenzo Langford and earning kudos from President Obama, there are still holier than thou segments of the population that don't possess the capacity to forgive.
A petition circulating on the Change.org website is requesting that Vick be banned from the State University of New York at Cortland University where Jets training camp will be held.
The petition calls Vick a sociopath and demands that his deplorable treatment of animals not be forgotten.
The petition also reads: "If we welcome Vick onto our campus, we are complicit in his crimes. We are sending the message that, for money and publicity, we will turn a blind eye to the horrors of dogfighting."
The Jets and SUNY Cortland have declined to comment on the petition.
