Solange Knowles is a cold chick. Who could have predicted that Beyonce's little sister — the little girl teeny-bopping with Lil' Romeo — would have grown into a cultural tastemaker that is very much in the black music vanguard? Her new single, "Losing You," doesn't sound like the trash heap of electro-pop that popular black singers seem intent on poisoning our ears with. Produced by Dev Hynes of Blood Orange, it has a worldly quality about it — subtle motherland rhythms, guitar from the Bob Marley & Wailers manual. There's a distinct 80s pop vibe, too. It's a winner. And the video, shot in South Africa, is dope, too. Solange is still adorable to me, just like that little girl standing in front of the Ferris wheel with Percy's son.
