The Boxing World Would Be Better If Shannon Briggs Was In The Mix

Time to keep it real with you all, my guilty boxing pleasure is definitely watching Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs. The two-time heavyweight champ hasn’t fought since May 2016 but has mastered the art of staying relevant in the social media generation.

His “Let’s Go Champ” chant has created a cult following in boxing as he terrorizes all the heavyweights that he” just doesn’t like”. At the top of the list, former heavyweight champ Tyson Fury, whom he calls “Pie-son” Fury for being out of shape. Fury has never been the model of physical beauty, but since being sidelined for violating the banned substances policy with cocaine metabolites being found in his system, he has ballooned up exceedingly.

Briggs (60-6-1) has had no mercy on Fury with a barrage of memes disparaging the Brit in an attempt to coax him into a fight. Briggs has even traveled to the U.K. to try and find Fury, and stepped to other heavyweights like David Haye at random times when he felt like they were ducking him. Briggs has yet another self-judgmental phrase for these actions, “chill, champ, chill”.

His feverish pursuit of Deontay Wilder, whom Briggs has labeled “Beyonce”, has no bounds as Briggs disrespected his spectacular win over Bermane Stiverne at the Barclays Center with a series of social media posts and actually stepping to Wilder in the streets as his star rose.

Open and honest about an alcohol problem that took him out of competition for four years after his unanimous decision loss to Vitali Klitschko in 2010, Briggs has stated numerous times that he wants to keep fighting at the highest level. And his relentless pursuit of those occupying those slots is nothing short of epic.

In the high stakes world of heavyweights where PED usage is rampant, it must be noted that Briggs had failed a drug test for a scheduled fight last May, for increased levels of testosterone, and was suspended by the WBA for six months. At 46 years old, the challenges to stay in a young man’s game are fierce and Briggs has seemingly found a new solution, post-suspension, with CBD products.

Briggs’ newest business venture is Champ RX LLC, an alternative health and wellness line of CBD products that are 100% THC free. According to Briggs, ChampRX has already partnered with several professional sports teams and organizations to enable research on how CBD products can help with CTE and other brain disease and damage caused by traumatic head injuries. The product line will be available to consumers in early 2018 and aims to help with the pains that have dogged him during his career.

Still, beyond the social media maelstrom and new business, Briggs is pure old school, knuckle-up boxing to the core. His body shots are legendary and as the holder of the most first-round knockouts in heavyweight history at 35, he is still as dangerous as ever. Currently, on a nine-fight win streak since 2010 with those KOs in the first round, I’m going to need you to put some respect on the Briggs name.

Will he get Tyson Fury? Probably not, as he is eyeing a matchup with Anthony Joshua in late 2018. Wilder? That’s doubtful as the intensity between Luis Ortiz and Wilder has been reignited after Ortiz’s recent victory in Miami.

Still, the man with the best catchphrase in boxing deserves to be in the picture for if nothing else, keeping the “gully-ness” in the game with a no respect, ‘run up on your man’s and them’ promotional-style that is both entertaining and polarizing.

Shannon Briggs is a true son of Brooklyn that never lost his edge and the boxing world would be better off if they let him swim with today’s sharks because he has no plan of leaving anytime soon. So to all the heavyweights on top today, “let’s go champ” and let Shannon Briggs live.
