The flyers and advertisements for the new HBO drama True Detective have been all over the place for months. Apparently, that advertising push was successful for the cable television channel. One would think that it would have been difficult for any show premiere against such a popular show as the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards which sawits biggest ratings in 10 years.
But True Detective, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, enjoyed the largest debut for a cable television drama in recent memory with 2.3 million viewers tuning in to see Sunday's initial broadcast of the first show. That's the biggest premiere for an HBO show since Game of Thrones opened with 2.2 million in 2011 and Boardwalk Empire dropped with 4.8 million viewers back in 2010.
