Happy Birthday Hip Hop

This year, Hip Hop is celebrating its 40th birthday, and reporter Lisa Evers and Fox 5 New York's morning show, Good Day, New York, plan to honor the milestone with a one-hour TV special.

Special guests will be music historians and rappers including Biz Markie, Naughty by Nature, Black Sheep and Kool Herc. The show will also discuss the deaths of rap royalty Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, along with a look into the successful careers of Kanye West, Dr. Dre, Diddy, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, and Ice-T.

Birthed in New York, Hip Hop has not only lasted much longer than people predicted, but it has thrived over the years and left its mark all around the globe.

Evers said, “Even up into the 1990s, people would tell me it was just thug music… But look around today. It’s the dominant music in our culture… It’s black, white, every color. It’s multiracial. It’s international. It’s part of our language. It’s setting fashion trends.”

The special will air on Fox Channel 5 on Thursday, February 20, at 9 AM.
