The march of movie award shows leading up to the 86th Annual Academy Awards continued last night as the British Academy of Film and Television Awards wrapped up. As many expected, the Steve McQueen-directed film 12 Years a Slave won Best Film. He reportedly said there were currently 21 million people in slavery “as we sit here” and added, “I just hope 150 years from now, our ambivalence will not allow another filmmaker to make this film.”
Chiwetel Ejiofor won the trophy for best actor for his role as Solomon Northrup in 12 Years a Slave. He beat such greats as Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale in the best actor category.
The space thriller Gravity, which starred Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, took home the award for best director (Alfonso Cuaron), best cinematography, best sound and best original music. Cate Blanchett earned the award for best actress for her role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine while Somali-American actor Barkhad Abdi was named best supporting actor for his role opposite Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips.
