After Landry Jones' eligibility expired, Blake "Belldozer" was considered the presumptive starter for 2013. When Bell lost the starting job to Travis Knight in the offseason, it was the most shocking decision of the offseason. In two starts Knight was so-so, throwing for 205 yards, four touchdowns, a trio of interceptions and boasted a subpar 43.8 percent completion percentage. After Trevor Knight bruised his knee against West Virginia on Saturday, Stoops inserted Bell as the starter against Tulsa. In his first collegiate start, Bell may have done enough to make Stoops rethink his decision.
Known last season as the Sooners' goal-line Wildcat quarterback, Bell rushed for just 24 yards on 10 carries. Instead, he put on a precision passing clinic against Tulsa. Four touchdowns and 413 yards later, the book on Bell has changed. It was a flashback to his high school days when Bell, the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2010 throwing for 7,000 yards and 69 touchdowns during his final two seasons at Kansas' Bishop Carroll High School.
In the preseason, Bell was considered a Heisman dark horse tranquilizer sleeper candidate. It's not too late for him to jump back in the race if Stoops realizes he made the wrong decision.
