Black Artists Dominate 2020 Grammy Nominations

On Wednesday morning, the nominations for the 62nd Grammy Awards were announced, and as usual, black artists dominated almost every contemporary category.

Lizzo leads all nominees with 8 nominations, and is closely followed by Lil Nas X (6), H.E.R. (5), and Beyoncé, Gary Clark Jr., J. Cole, and Lucky Daye who all grabbed 4 nominations.

The Grammys will take place on Sunday Jan. 26 and will be live on CBS at 7 p.m. EST. Alicia Keys is set to return as host, as she’ll be the third woman and the first female artist to host the show multiple times.

Michelle Obama received a nomination for best spoken word album for “Becoming,” as Nipsey Hussle received 3 posthumous nominations.

Earlier this year, a report from The Atlantic highlighted the long history black artists have when it comes to losing out in the show’s major categories, as a black artist hadn’t won Album of the Year since 2008 before Bruno Mars took the award home in 2018.
