UFC 198: Stipe Miocic KOs Fabricio Werdum to become the new UFC Heavyweight Champion
Cleveland, we got a champion, were the words uttered by Ohio native Stipe Miocic (15-2), who knocked out Fabricio Werdum (20-6-1) in the first round to win the UFC Heavyweight title last Saturday.
Werdum, who entered the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil on a six-fight win streak, never found his rhythm. Miocic took advantage of that ,working fast and smart with a mix of boxing and hard leg kicks.
Eventually, a wild volley left Werdum open and he caught a right hand flush, sending him to the mat and leaving the referee to stop the action at 2:47 of the first round.
Also, the UFC debut of Christiane “Cris Cyborg” Justino (16-1-1) did not disappoint as she stopped Leslie Smith (8-7-1) in just 81 seconds of their 140-pound catch-weight bout, knocking her out with unanswered punches that started from a clean right hand.
Cyborg has been on a campaign to fight former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, who fights at 135lbs, for some time and this was her first attempt at making the weight. Cyborg weighed in at 139lbs looking drained. It is still anyones guess if Rousey will ever agree to a higher catch-weight, as it seems impossible for Cyborg to ever reach 135lbs.
Phil Davis Take Unanimous Decision Over King Mo at Bellator 154
It took three rounds for Phil Davis (16-3-1) to secure his spot to face Liam McGreary for the Bellator Light Heavyweight belt when he defeated Muhammad King Mo Lawal (19-5-1) via unanimous decision at the SAP Center in San Jose, California last Saturday.
Lawal was aggressive as always, looking for the one punch right hand that would end this in a knockout. He connected a few times, but not enough. Davis used frequent kicks, to gain the points per round, but by the third and final round, he caught Lawal with a straight right hand that staggered the former champion. He eventually took him down and into a kimura submission attempt, where King Mo was saved by the bell.
Dusty Hernandez-Harrison Draws Against Mike Dallas, Jr.
In a welterweight showdown in Washington, D.C., Dusty Hernandez-Harrison fought to a split draw against Mike Dallas, Jr.
After relatively slow action, the fight heated up in the eighth when Hernandez-Harrison (29-0-1) backed Dallas, Jr. (21-3-1) into the corner and landed a left hook to the body that made Dallas drop to one knee.
Hernandez-Harrison kept up the pace in the ninth round but Dallas rallied back landing shots to the body and eventually one clean shot to Hernandez-Harrisons head.
