After a disappointing season in which they were picked by many to represent the National League in the World Series, The Washington Nationals fired manager Matt Williams today.
The Harper vs. Papelbon dugout showdown ultimately sealed the coach’s fate as he allowed Papelbon to pitch following the incident, stating that he didnt see it.
Injuries also played a crucial role in the Nationals struggles this season, as key players missed significant time. But Williams leadership and management of the bullpen was criticized heavily during pivotal games that contributed to them missing the postseason.
The Nats finished (83-79) this season, seven games behind the NL east division champion New York Mets, one year removed from a 96 win season.
