Today the family of NFL legend Frank Gifford announced that he passed away of natural causes. He was 84.
As an NFL player and later as a broadcaster, the former New York Giants halfback was involved with the NFL for over 45 years, including 12 seasons with the Giants.
Per the family statement:
“It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and friend, Frank Gifford. Frank died suddenly this beautiful Sunday morning of natural causes at his Connecticut home. We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being. We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time and we thank you for your prayers.”
His life in Pro Football mirrored his career on the field, as he did a little of everything, and did it well. At 26, Gifford was voted the NFL MVP for the 1956 season, which included the Giants first NFL title in 18 years. In the booth Gifford worked on Monday Night Football for 25 years as both a play by play announcer and color commentator. He also worked on gold for CBS for three years prior to joining Howard Cosell and the MNF team.
