According to CBS Sports, former St. John’s star, Chris Mullin, has been offered the heading coaching position at his alma mater and he is expected to accept.
As details are being worked out by both sides to replace Steve Lavin, who was fired Friday after five years at the University, fans of the Red Storm (and old school fans of the Redmen), are excited at the biggest news in New York City basketball since Phil Jackson was hired by the Knicks; hopefully season one for fans of the Johnnies will be better than the ones that Knicks fans are having.
Although he has no head coaching experience, the school is hoping that Mullin has the effect as Fred Hoiberg has had at Iowa State, his alma mater.
Mullin, a Brooklyn native, was a major star in college, being named a first team All-American and a member of the Final Four team in 1985 that featured Mark Jackson, Walter “The Truth” Berry, Bill Wennington and Willie Glass. He went on to become the seventh overall pick of the Golden State Warriors in 1986 and won an Olympic gold medal with the Dream Team in 1992.
