Today it was reported that Giancarlo Stanton, the 25 year old Flordia Marlins slugger, had agreed to a deal with the team that will pay him $325 million over 13 years. That will pay him an average of $25 million per season or $154,321 per game, making it the most lucartive deal for an American athlete as reported by ESPN.com.
Other deal points include a no-trade clause and the ability for Stanton to opt out after six years. Said owner Jeffrey Loria "It's a landmark moment for the franchise and Giancarlo, and it's for the city and fans to rally around."
Seeing that the team hasn't made the playoffs since 2003, and their payroll was the lowest in the majors at $52.3 million, this is a huge investment, and risk, for a team that many consider to be frugal; then again, it could mark the turning of the corner for a franchise that won two World Series trophies by spending big.
