Monta Ellis and the Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a three-year deal worth $30 million. This is what you call a match made in heaven for two entities that seemed to put too many eggs in one basket.
Ellis would've been guaranteed $11 million from the Milwaukee Bucks, but elected to opt out of his contract and hit the free agent market, except his demand wasn't quite as high as he may have originally believed. His agent at the time suffered the brunt of that reality and was fired because of it.
Now Ellis has found work with a team that was just as desperate to sign a marquee free agent as he was finding a new home. The Mavs gutted their championship roster of 2011, signed a bunch of guys to one-year deals to clear cap space for this free agent season with hopes of landing Dwight Howard.
But Howard picked the Interstate 45 rival in Houston and the Mavs have sort of been left scrambling. Even though the team is a bit guard heavy now with Jose Calderon and rookie Shane Larkin (is there a pass-first guard on this team?) all occupying the backcourt, the Ellis-Mavs connection is only fitting at this point.
