Al Haymon is expanding his market share across the pond. When Eddie Hearn set up shop in New York City he planted a flag.
The U.K. based boxing promoter signed Danny Jacobs and started doing fights in Madison Square Garden and the Barclays Center in 2018. As a result, a virtual arms race of fight dates and athletes occurred with a few players standing tall.
Boxing impresario, Al Haymon is a true dynamo with the strength to surpass Hearn’s moves in the States, however, Haymon is smarter than that. For the past two years, the U.K. has shown its ability to move the financial needle in the fight game.
Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, Kell Brook, and Amir Khan among other fighters have shown the power of the U.K. fans. Sellouts of soccer arenas are commonplace and there is little incentive for elite U.K. based fighters to fight in the States.
As a result, Haymon’s first major UK event has been announced. A new Super Middleweight match between ITV and Premier Boxing Champions, featuring James DeGale and Chris Eubank Jr. The two will clash at London’s O2 on February 23rd.
The unique collaboration is the first time that PBC has partnered with a UK broadcaster to stage boxing events regularly in the UK. The exclusive three-year deal will guarantee a minimum of 15 televised events each year, drawing from PBC’s unrivaled group of over 160 of the best boxers in the world. This includes more than 60 current and former world champions in matches staged both in the UK and the US.
Boxing is in full global swing and Haymon is continuing to expand his market share.
