30,000 for Dr. J

April 17, 1987 – Dr. J reached yet another milestone with his customary style, grace, and sense of the moment.  Playing in the final regular-season home game of his 16-year career, Erving needed 36 points to become the third player in basketball history to reach 30,000.  A tall order for anyone, not to mention a 37-year-old playing on gimpy knees. he did the trick with five minutes still remaining in the third period.

Only Karl Malone, Michael Jordan, and most recent Kobe Bryant have joined the exclusive club since Erving's retirement, leaving Dr. J number five on the all-time list. (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain are the other two members.)
