15 Years Ago Serena Began Her Takeover By Defeating Venus At Wimbledon

Remember when Venus Williams was still considered a better tennis player than her younger sister Serena by everyone in the world except their father, Richard Williams?  Venus had just won back-to-back Wimbledon titles in 2000 and 2001, defeating Serena that year. Yeah, that was a long time ago.

With hindsight as our advantage we now know that, while Venus is still considered an all-time great women’s tennis player, Serena is considered the GOAT of her sport and one of the greatest athletes of all time.

On July 7th, 2002, 15 years ago today, Serena defeated her sister Venus to win her first Wimbledon championship.  It was not their first time meeting in the finals at Wimbledon, but Serena would best her sister again the following year, thus cementing her place as the better of the dynamic duo.
